Washington, D.C. — House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Subcommittee on Health Chair Brett Guthrie (R-KY) issued the following statement regarding the Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees 2023 Report:

“The updated insolvency date released in today’s report is not a cause for celebration but rather underscores the urgency for the Biden administration to work with Congress to strengthen Medicare in a way that doesn’t cut benefits for seniors. As the trustees noted, the pandemic and its aftermath have created greater uncertainty for projecting program expenditures into the future, so we cannot delay long-term solutions any longer. We must seize the opportunity as we have an obligation to guarantee this crucial program for our nation’s seniors remains in place.

“Just this past week, our committee convened a bipartisan hearing to examine growing health care costs and potential solutions involving transparency and greater competition that can help address some of the structural challenges within Medicare. Republicans stand ready to enact realistic policies that strengthen Medicare without cutting benefits, and we urge President Biden to work with us.”
