Chairman Guthrie Applauds Trump Administration Efforts to Reduce Vehicle Costs and End Biden-era EV Mandates

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation released a rule to reset the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards:

“President Biden’s EV mandates have been driving up prices for new cars, preventing car buyers from purchasing newer, safer vehicles. Americans shouldn't be forced to buy EVs just to appease Democrats' extreme climate agenda, Secretary Duffy’s work will save lives and reduce costs for families across the country, and I applaud this much-needed announcement.”

BACKGROUND:

The final initiative – called “Freedom Means Affordable Cars” – will:

  • Give automakers the flexibility to manufacture cars the public wants to buy
  • Reduce the average cost of a new vehicle by $1,300 for American families
  • Save the American people $138 billion over the next five years
  • Prevent more than 300,000 serious injuries and save 1,900 lives by encouraging new car sales
