Promise Then: “If you like your current plan, you will be able to keep it. Let Me Repeat That:– If You Like Your Plan, You’ll Be Able To Keep It.” -President Obama (July 21, 2009)

Headlines Now: Market Watch: Firms to cut health plans as reform starts; Reuters: Many employers to drop health benefits: McKinsey; National Journal: Report: Reform May Move Millions More Off Employer Insurance; WSJ: No, You Can’t Keep Your Health Insurance

According to a study published in McKinsey Quarterly on June 6, 2011, 30 percent of employers say they will definitely stop providing health coverage by 2014. Among businesses with a higher awareness of the law’s impact, more than 50 percent and even upward of 60 percent will consider pursuing other options.

Translation? Many who receive coverage through work will be dropped into the public exchanges. Even workers whose companies continue to provide health benefits will likely be forced to change plans.

It may be time for fact checkers to revisit President Obama’s pledge.
